Speelzijde of speelkatoen / speeldoeken van katoen - Pit and play

Play silk or play cotton / play cloths made of cotton

Cotton play cloths (play cloth, play cotton, play silk)

Pit and Play's cotton play cloths, also called playcotton, are made of 100% cotton.
Soft, supple, and strong. Perfect for children who love to explore, build, roll, and imagine.

We consciously choose cotton instead of silk, so that our play cloths are completely animal-friendly and sustainable.
They feel wonderful, are washable and stay beautiful even after lots of fun.

What is a play silk?

A play silk, or in Dutch speel zijde, is a silk play cloth that is often used with open-ended toys.
Children use it for dressing up, building huts or role-playing.

Silk is smooth and shiny, but the production process is less friendly to caterpillars.
When making silk, the cocoons of silkworms are usually heated, which causes the caterpillar to die.

Play silk vs. playcotton, an animal-friendly alternative

At Pit and Play we consciously choose playcotton as an alternative to play silk.
Our cotton play cloths have the same versatility, but are completely plant-based, sustainable and strong.

They feel soft and natural, are breathable, and can be washed without worry.
They offer everything that play silk promises – but with respect for nature and animals.

Sustainable play with playcotton

With Playcotton you give children toys that move with their imagination.
A cotton play cloth has no fixed shape or purpose, making each game unique.

Today a knight's cape.
Tomorrow a picnic blanket.
Next week maybe a tent or a sail from a pirate ship.

This way, one cloth grows with each child – day after day, game after game.

Cotton play cloths in shop playing and packing

When playing shop, cotton play cloths often take on a surprising role.
Children use them as wrapping paper for their “bought” items.

This way they learn to fold, knot and bow, they develop their fine motor skills and discover how much fun sustainable play can be.
Wrapping a gift with fabric also feels much more special than with paper – and the cloth can be used again and again.
